About the Article
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted in 2015, represent the most ambitious global development agenda to date. Building on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the SDGs broadened the focus to include economic transformation, environmental sustainability, and governance, alongside poverty reduction and social services. This article examines the origins of the SDGs, their integrated framework of 17 goals and 169 targets, and the global commitment underpinning their implementation. It highlights milestones such as the 2030 Agenda, the role of the UN in coordination, and national integrations in countries like China and Kenya. While the SDGs provide a powerful normative and operational roadmap, challenges remain in resource mobilization, monitoring, and accountability. The analysis underscores their dual significance for academics studying global governance and practitioners embedding SDGs into strategy and program design.
