About the Article

This Teaching Paper introduces three foundational strategic planning tools—SWOT analysis, scenario planning, and environmental scanning—and demonstrates how non-profit organizations can use them to anticipate change, evaluate capacity, and adapt to dynamic environments. Together, these tools help organizations identify internal strengths and weaknesses, envision multiple possible futures, and monitor external trends that influence performance. Through practical examples and a detailed case study, the paper illustrates how integrating these frameworks enhances resilience, improves decision-making, and aligns strategy with mission. Designed as a practical resource, it supports non-profit leaders, managers, and educators in applying structured, evidence-based planning methods in complex, uncertain contexts.
