Abstract
Teaching Paper: Safeguarding-Based Research Protocol for Non-Profit Fieldwork provides a practical protocol for integrating safeguarding responsibilities into research conducted through non-profit organisations, community-based institutions, and vulnerable fieldwork settings. It is designed for contexts where research access involves service users, programme participants, vulnerable communities, staff members, organisational spaces, or sensitive institutional knowledge.
The protocol addresses a recurring gap in applied research: ethical approval may define formal research procedures, while safeguarding responsibilities remain underdeveloped in the day-to-day conduct of fieldwork. This teaching paper helps researchers and host organisations clarify access boundaries, participant protection, staff responsibilities, sensitive information handling, escalation routes, consent expectations, contextual identifiability risks, and publication-related safeguarding review.
