Participatory approaches are fundamental to inclusive and sustainable community development, ensuring that local voices shape analysis, planning, and implementation. This Teaching Paper introduces five practical participatory tools—transect walks, social mapping, seasonal calendars, Venn diagrams, and matrix ranking—each supported by clear templates and facilitation notes. Drawing from participatory rural appraisal (PRA) methods, it bridges academic frameworks and practical application to strengthen engagement and accountability. A case study from Kenya illustrates how these tools enable communities to co-design water and sanitation projects while fostering ownership and equity. The paper also addresses common facilitation challenges such as cultural barriers, facilitator bias, and unequal participation, offering strategies for inclusive practice.
