About the Teaching Paper
Participatory accountability tools have become essential for fostering inclusiveness, transparency, and trust within the non-profit sector. Moving beyond compliance, these tools democratize decision-making and encourage shared responsibility across stakeholders. This Teaching Paper introduces three key participatory mechanisms—community scorecards, participatory budgeting, and peer accountability reviews—that strengthen upward, downward, and lateral accountability. Drawing from global practices and academic literature, it explains how these tools create dialogue between communities, donors, and partner organizations. A case study from a Latin American youth NGO coalition illustrates how participatory budgeting and peer reviews enhanced trust, transparency, and donor confidence. The paper offers implementation guidance, reflection questions, and critical insights to help practitioners and scholars integrate participatory methods into governance and accountability systems.
