About the Article
This Teaching Paper explores affordable and inclusive approaches to leadership development in non-profit organizations. It highlights three practical methods—peer learning groups, community-based workshops, and mentoring programs—as well as online platforms such as Coursera, edX, and Khan Academy that provide high-quality training at minimal cost. Designed for resource-limited contexts, the paper demonstrates how organizations can strengthen leadership pipelines through collaboration, mentoring, and digital learning. A case study of a women’s empowerment NGO in South Asia illustrates how a blended approach combining mentoring and online learning improved leadership confidence and retention. The paper advocates democratizing leadership development to ensure that even small organizations can cultivate capable, resilient leaders and achieve long-term sustainability.
