About the Article

Language shapes perception, influences behavior, and reflects organizational values. For non-profits, where missions are built on principles of inclusion, equity, and justice, the use of inclusive language is both an ethical imperative and a strategic necessity.

This Teaching Paper introduces an Inclusive Language Guide that provides principles and practices for avoiding stereotypes, respecting pronouns, applying gender-neutral terminology, ensuring cultural sensitivity, and avoiding jargon. A case study illustrates how restructured communication materials increased engagement, while tips, reflection questions, and limitations support critical learning. The paper offers academics conceptual insights into language and inclusion, and gives practitioners a ready-to-use guide for embedding inclusivity into daily communication.

Key Topics

  • Inclusive language and communication strategy
  • Gender-neutral terminology
  • Respecting pronouns and identity expression
  • Cultural sensitivity in messaging
  • Avoiding jargon and stereotypes
  • Embedding inclusivity in organizational practices
