Abstract
Teaching Paper: Emergent Findings Ethical Review Checklist for Qualitative Research provides a practical safeguarding tool for reviewing ethical risks that arise when qualitative findings develop beyond the original research scope, access agreement, or consent frame. It is designed for research involving vulnerable communities, non-profit field sites, sensitive topics, small organisations, and community-based qualitative data.
The checklist addresses a recurring challenge in qualitative research: findings may emerge during analysis that were not fully anticipated during ethics approval, field access, or participant consent. These findings may create new risks related to representation, contextual identifiability, institutional trust, participant vulnerability, or publication framing. This teaching paper helps researchers, supervisors, ethics reviewers, and host organisations identify when emergent findings require additional review, reframing, consultation, or safeguarding action before dissemination.
