About the Article
Non-profit legitimacy is dynamic and context-dependent, evolving through the interaction of external pressures and internal strengths. This Teaching Paper presents four case-based templates that help NGOs, researchers, and evaluators systematically analyze legitimacy: the Legitimacy Threats Matrix, Sources of Legitimacy Case Analysis, Stakeholder Perception Map, and Comparative Regional Legitimacy Review. Drawing on institutional and accountability theory, the paper translates complex academic concepts into practical, diagnostic tools. Each template enables users to identify vulnerabilities, assess strengths, and map stakeholder perceptions across diverse contexts. A regional case study illustrates how these frameworks can inform strategic planning, governance, and donor engagement. By bridging scholarship and practice, the paper provides NGOs with adaptable instruments for maintaining credibility, transparency, and sustainability in changing environments.
