About the Article
Sustainable resource management has become one of the defining challenges of the 21st century, as climate change, urbanization, and population growth increase pressures on food, water, energy, and waste systems. Smart technologies such as IoT sensors, automated metering, artificial intelligence, robotics, and blockchain are transforming how resources are monitored, optimized, and conserved. This article explores applications in water, agriculture, and waste management, drawing on global case studies from Cape Town, India, and Nairobi. It highlights the benefits of predictive analytics, decentralized systems, and blockchain-enabled transparency while acknowledging barriers related to costs, infrastructure, capacity, and governance. The analysis argues that pilot-to-scale strategies, community engagement, and cross-sector partnerships are critical for success. By linking global sustainability frameworks with practical examples, this article contributes to scholarly debates on resource governance while providing practitioners with actionable strategies for inclusive and resilient management.
