Non-profit leaders face a complex interplay of emotional, ethical, and structural pressures that distinguish their stress landscape from that of corporate or public-sector leaders. This article explores emotional labour, resource scarcity, donor accountability, moral injury, and vicarious trauma as interconnected stressors that erode wellbeing and resilience. Drawing on leadership and organizational psychology, it demonstrates how moral distress, decision fatigue, and trauma exposure intersect with chronic funding instability to create unique risks of burnout and compassion fatigue. By contrasting these challenges with those of corporate executives and entrepreneurs, the analysis underscores the sector’s compounded vulnerabilities. Recognizing these pressures as structural rather than individual problems reframes leadership wellbeing as a systemic responsibility—requiring new models of organizational support, funding design, and governance that prioritize mental health and sustainability.
