About the Article
The modernization of energy infrastructure has become a cornerstone of sustainable development, with smart grids positioned as a transformative technology for enhancing energy security, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. By integrating information and communication technologies (ICT), smart grids enable two-way communication, real-time monitoring, and automated control of energy flows. These systems support renewable energy integration, improve grid stability, and empower consumers with actionable data. However, widespread implementation faces barriers such as high upfront costs, technical complexity, cybersecurity risks, and outdated regulatory systems. This article examines the foundations and applications of smart grids, highlighting case studies from India, Kenya, and the European Union. It argues that supportive policies, public-private partnerships, and inclusive stakeholder engagement are essential to unlock the potential of smart grids for sustainable and resilient energy futures.
