Safeguarding Tools for Preventing Research Harm is a NEYA Global Teaching Paper series developed to support ethical, safeguarding-sensitive research with vulnerable communities, non-profit organisations, faith-based institutions, community-based field sites, and socially sensitive contexts.
The series provides practical tools, checklists, protocols, templates, and review forms for preventing research harm before, during, and after fieldwork. It responds to a recurring gap in applied and qualitative research: formal ethics approval may exist, while practical risks related to access, consent, publication framing, contextual identifiability, terminology, host organisation accountability, and post-publication harm remain insufficiently addressed.
This series helps researchers, supervisors, ethics committees, journal editors, safeguarding officers, non-profit leaders, and host organisations strengthen research accountability where vulnerable communities may be affected by how knowledge is collected, interpreted, published, and circulated.
Purpose of the Series
The purpose of this series is to translate safeguarding concerns into usable research ethics tools. Each teaching paper focuses on a specific point of risk in the research process, from field access and consent to publication review and post-publication response.
Together, the series supports a more accountable research pathway in which vulnerable communities are not only treated as sources of data, but protected as human, institutional, and social contexts with dignity, agency, and safeguarding rights.
