About the Article
Risk assessment and analysis are foundational to effective crisis and contingency planning in the non-profit sector. Operating with limited resources and strong community dependencies, non-profits face disproportionate vulnerability to both internal and external threats. This article examines how organizations identify, evaluate, and prioritize risks using tools such as risk matrices, FMEA, RCA, Monte Carlo simulations, and Bow-Tie Analysis. It also highlights participatory approaches—workshops, scenario planning, and collaborative risk registers—as critical for embedding preparedness into governance. Practical illustrations demonstrate how risk analysis strengthens resilience, improves resource allocation, and safeguards mission continuity. By integrating academic theory with practical applications, the article argues for risk analysis as a strategic imperative rather than an optional add-on in non-profit management.
