About the Article
Networking is a vital component of professional growth, knowledge exchange, and resource mobilization in the non-profit sector. Conferences and convenings provide opportunities to establish meaningful connections with peers, experts, and potential collaborators. However, many practitioners approach these events without a structured plan, leading to missed opportunities and superficial interactions. This Teaching Paper introduces a structured Networking Plan Template and Elevator Pitch Worksheet to help non-profit professionals maximize the value of conferences. Drawing on organizational strategy literature, it outlines steps to define networking goals, identify key individuals and sessions, craft meaningful conversation starters, and develop systematic follow-up strategies. A realistic case study illustrates how structured preparation transforms networking into a strategic asset for long-term collaboration. The paper also identifies common challenges and offers practical tips to overcome them. Ultimately, this resource equips practitioners and students with tools to strengthen professional networks, advance organizational goals, and contribute to the collective knowledge of the non-profit field.
